The high poverty rate among the elderly has long been a problem here in Korea... and the latest data shows that those earning the lowest income... have also become much older on average compared to the past.
Statistics Korea says the average age of people whose income is at the bottom 20 percent... was 63 as of the fourth quarter last year... up nearly 12 years from 2003.
The average age for the second income quartile was 54, up 10 years from 2003,... while the country's top 20 percent... were 5 years older with an average age of 50.
