The Blue House, government and ruling party have agreed to decentralize South Korea's police force, transfering more duties to local police units.
The three groups agreed on Thursday to expand the system to five cities and provinces this year and nationwide by 2021.
Currently, the system, which transfers some duties to police units under the control of local governments, has only been test operated in Jeju island.
They seek to allocate more practical duties such as those that are related to sexual and school violence, as well as regional traffic accidents to the local police, and allow the national police to be in charge of broader national issues.
They vowed to cooperate to legislate the bill and proceed with its implementation as soon as possible.
