Fewest ever babies born per day in Seoul in 2017, elderly population at 13.5%: Report
  • 5 years ago
Another sign of a rapid decline in the birth rate here in Korea...
The average number of babies born a day here in Seoul... one of the world's most populous cities... was just 1-hundred-79 last year,... which is the *lowest on record.... and the first time that it has dropped below 2-hundred.
Citing the '2018 Seoul Statistics Annual Report,' a city official said..... a decreasing number of marriages and rising unemployment contributed to the decline.
With the rapidly falling birthrate,... Seoul could be categorized as an 'aged society' this year.
The number of people in the capital over the age of 65.... went up almost five percent last year... from the previous year,... making up 13-point-5 percent of the population.
When the elderly population surpasses 14 percent,.... it's classified as an 'aged society'... and it's most likely that Seoul has surpassed that limit this year.
