Data suggest more newly married couples in Korea are holding off having children.
Of those who married in the five years through 2017, the number without kids was higher than the period a year earlier.
The data suggest the reason might be the cost.
Kim Ji-yeon has the details.
The number of newly married couples in Korea that are not bearing children is on the rise... especially those that are double-income households or with no residence under their name.
Data released by Statistics Korea on Tuesday shows that in November, 2017... 37-point-5-percent of one-point-one-million couples that registered for marriage certificates between 2012 and 2017... have responded that they're not raising children.
That's a one-point-two-percentage-points increase compared to the previous year.
Double-income households, which comprise nearly 45-percent of all newlyweds, were found to be more likely to not have children compared to households that relied on a single breadwinner.
The average yearly income of the newlyweds overall soared by nearly 5-percent on-year to an estimated 46-thousand-700 U.S. dollars.
The majority of newlyweds were found to have a loan balance in financial institutions... most of them recording between 88-point-five-thousand and 177-thousand dollars.
Data also showed those that did not own a residence were more likely to not have children than newlyweds who already owned a home.
The proportion of newlyweds that owned a residence... mostly apartments,... increased slightly from the previous year to 43-point-6-percent in 2017.
