S. Korea set to announce official shutdown of controversial 'comfort women' foundation
  • 5 years ago
The shutdown of a controversial "comfort women" foundation is set to be announced as early as Wednesday,... a decision that's expected to worsen already-strained bilateral ties between Seoul and Tokyo.
The decision to shut the Reconciliation and Healing Foundation within two years comes amid widespread criticism over the foundation itself and the agreement reached between South Korea and Japan in late 2015 to resolve Tokyo's wartime sexual enslavement of Korean women.
The foundation was established in mid-2016 with the eight-point-nine million U.S. dollars contributed by Japan.
