Seoul's top office is pushing for drastic reform of the nation's anti-corruption measures.
In meeting Tuesday with the head of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, as well as other anti-corruption related agencies, President Moon Jae-in said the government should take the first step.
"We should not be afraid of drastic reforms to fight corruption. Corruption cannot is not big or small. Even the most minor acts of corruption can change the life of the victim and ultimately the fate of the Republic of Korea. To fight corruption, the government should be cleaned up first."
It was the third such meeting since President Moon took office.
He was briefed about nine types of corruption and stressed they need to be taken care of properly.
Those types include unjust academic admissions and hiring, the abuse of power in the public sector, and graft and embezzlement -- such as the unlawful issuance of planning permits, tax evasion and fraud against the elderly, especially in nursing homes.
The President pointed to the recent public anger over corruption at private kindergartens and over power abuse scandals, and he said that when the nation lets up its guard, corruption soon rears its head again.
"During the five years of the Moon Jae-in administration, we should be determined to implement strong anti-corruption policies and leave behind a clean country. This will require our unceasing efforts."
He reiterated the need for steady and effective anti-corruption policies that will ultimately lead to a society that is fair and transparent.
