The South Korean government is stepping up cooperation with the UN Refugee Agency.
Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-hwa met with Filippo Grandi, the High Commissioner for Refugees, to discuss ways to promote cooperation.
The top diplomat highly praised the agency's role in protecting refugees, especially through the Global Compact on Refugees, a comprehensive framework that'll be endorsed by the UN General Assembly by the end of this year.
She also noted that South Korea has been increasing humanitarian aid for refugees and wants to keep working with the agency on the global refugee crisis, which includes the hundreds of Yemeni refugees who recently arrived on Jeju Island.
The High Commissioner described South Korea as a newly rising donor country that has quickly expanded its aid for refugees.
