A government proposal on the issue is ready to roll,... but President Moon Jae-in admits it's crucially important to reach a broad social consensus on how to change the national pension system before making any moves.

"The National Pension belongs to the people. So, the most important element in reforming the pension system is reaching a social consensus."

The president made the remark on Monday during a weekly meeting with his top aides.
There are concerns the funds could be depleted by 2057,... a claim made by an advisory panel a couple of weeks ago.
While raising premiums is seen as inevitable, the president called for efforts to ease public anxiety.
He said "as long as the nation exists, there can never be a case where one cannot collect his or her payments after paying the insurance premiums."
President Moon also highlighted, one of the most important objectives of revising the system... is to shore up income for senior citizens.
