U.S. vows to vigorously defend against Iran lawsuit in UN top court
  • 6 years ago
The United States has lashed out at Iran after Tehran asked the International Court of Justice to order the U.S. lift its sanctions imposed a few weeks ago.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on Monday that Washington would vigorously defend itself at the ICJ, calling Iran's filing at the court an attempt to interfere with America's national security.
Tehran filed the case at the UN's highest court last month claiming the Trump administration's sanctions were in breach of a 1955 treaty that regulates economic and consular ties between the two countries.
The sanctions were imposed after President Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal.
