South Korea's trade deficit in intellectual property rights hit a record low in the 1st half of 2018…on the back of the growing global popularity of the country's online games.
According to a Bank of Korea report released on Tuesday, the country recorded a trade deficit of 600-million U.S. dollars in intellectual property in the January to June period…which is the lowest since related figures were compiled since 2010.
South Korea exported around 6-point-7 billion U.S. dollars and imported 7-point-3 billion dollars in intellectual property rights, such as copyrights, patents, and trademarks, during the first half of the year.
The central bank attributed the decrease in the deficit to the growing worldwide popularity of local online games.
It said South Korean exports of game franchise rights and computer software copyrights has been on the rise recently.
