The ruling Democratic Party of Korea has shortlisted three candidates who will compete for the post of party chair at an upcoming national convention.
In a primary with eight candidates on Thursday,... the tickets to the leadership race were won by seven-term lawmaker Lee Hae-chan,... and four-term lawmakers Kim Jin-pyo and Song Young-gil.

Lee Hae-chan -- who served as prime minister between 2004 and 2006 under the Roh Moo-hyun administration -- is expected to play a key role in boosting relations with the top office, if elected,... given his close ties to President Moon Jae-in.

"We need a talented and strong leadership that can support the Moon Jae-in administration. As a former prime minister, I will use my experience to boost relations between the party, the government and the presidential office.

Kim Jin-pyo is also known to have close relations with President Moon.
He said that he will work to breathe life into the ailing economy... using his past experience as the country's finance chief.

"I will approach our party members with strategies to revive the economy and win their support. I'm the only candidate that can do that."

But there have been voices within the party stressing the need for a shift in generation,... which could mean more votes for the younger candidates.
Song Young-gil, in his 50s,... is younger than the other two candidates who are in their 60s and 70s.
The former mayor of Incheon,... until recently, served as the chairman of a presidential committee tasked with building economic cooperation with Northeast Asian countries.

"I have shown the kind of new, unified leadership needed for a new generation. And as the chairman of a presidential panel, I have built the experience and trust needed to do the best job working with the presidential office and the government.

"The new party chief will take the baton from the incumbent chair, Choo Mi-ae,... and will be tasked with building cooperative relations with the opposition bloc to get the President Moon's policy agendas rolling. The national convention will be held on August 25th,... and the new chair will take the helm for the next two years. Kim Min-ji, Arirang News."
