North Korea's economic development is a growing topic of interest these days. As such, the Ajou Institute of Unification hosted a conference on how the regime could achieve that goal.
Hong Yoo sheds light on some of the ideas and opinions exchanged during that meeting.
Top representatives from the United Nations and international financial institutions attended the 1st Ajou Korean Peninsula International Conference at the Korea Press Center in Seoul on Wednesday. The conference was hosted by the Ajou Institute of Unification.

Under the title "Applying Lessons from International Development Cooperation Experience", the officials, including the Vice President of the World Bank, discussed which cases of international development were applicable to North Korea.

"You can have rapid growth as result of those resources but you have a lot of volatility that comes with that rapid growth depending on commodity price changes, global commodity price changes and it's buffeted by its further economic development in the rapid world."

"Third lesson, be practical and goal oriented when you design the private and public sector role. There is a public sector role when planning and coordinating infrastructure that is a public sector role."

During the panel discussion on the topic "International lessons and perspectives towards economic development in North Korea", the speakers talked about how balance is important for sustainable development.
Regional cooperation was also mentioned as a key factor for North Korea's development, as is the global economy's willingness to share knowledge and experience of economic development.

"China and Vietnam’s models of economic development were also highlighted as possible models for North Korea.
But the experts also said that forcing a certain model on North Korea cannot result in development.
Instead, Pyongyang must choose which model it thinks will be most helpful for its development.
