Video released by the US Customs and Border Protection Office on June 18 shows immigrants being held in large cages inside the Central Processing Center in McAllen, Texas. The footage was shot during a media tour the day before. Many of the detainees are seen using emergency blankets, often known as space blankets, to keep warm and as shoes. The facility, known as Ursula, is the largest immigration processing center in the country, and is considered to be at the center of the White House’s policy of separating children from their parents after they cross the border into the US illegally.Among the media organizations that toured the facility on June 17 was NBC, who reported that “children will be sent to separate facilities run by the Department of Health and Human Services while their parents are sent to a detention center to await prosecution before a federal judge.” They also reported that due to a backlog, hundreds of minors were being kept at the center past the 72 person limit dictated by US policy.CBS reported that media were not allowed use cameras inside Ursula, and said the tour was tightly controlled.
