Between now and the summit next month, it's expected that at least the broad outlines of a deal will be put together by officials in Pyongyang and Washington.
But the question is -- a deal on what scale... and will it lead to the North's complete denuclearization.
Some of that could be left until President Trump and Kim Jong-un actually meet.
Both are leaders with distinctive styles, so will they get along?

Two very different yet similar leaders of decades-long adversaries are set to have their historic first meeting next month.
The two leaders aren't even of the same generation. U.S. President Donald Trump is more than twice the age of Kim Jong-un.
They also rose to power in contrasting ways.
While Trump is a businessman turned politician who climbed his way up to the nation's top seat, Kim was born into the regime's ruling family,... who have been passing down the crown for three generations.
But the two also share similar backgrounds like being born into rich families, and having international levels of education.
Whether there's a spark between the two leaders could be crucial in the upcoming North Korea-U.S. summit, as Trump has emphasized the chemistry between him and his counterparts when meeting other world leaders.
But the two leaders share two major characteristics,... 'unpredictability' and 'boldness in making game changing bets'.
Some observers say these characteristics are what helped Trump win his presidency. He bravely jumped into the world of politics, and changed the game with never-before-seen moves and pledges.
Kim also showed these characteristics, when he made a series of bold moves to open up his regime after his New Year's address.
His offer to South Korean President Moon Jae-in to cross over to the North for a few seconds when they met at the military demarcation line at the beginning of the inter-Korean summit also surprised many.
It is this unpredictability and boldness that enabled the Pyongyang-Washington summit,... as it was unimaginable just a few months ago, with the two leaders having exchanged harsh rhetoric last year.
