President Trump’s attorneys are reportedly considering offering a meeting between him and special counsel Robert Mueller in an effort to bring about a faster conclusion to the Russia investigation.
According to a new report from Politico, which broke the story based on an inside White House source, “If Mueller doesn’t request an interview by Thanksgiving, Trump’s lawyers might even force the issue by volunteering Trump’s time.”
And despite the extensive questions Trump would likely face during such a meeting, the source is quoted as saying, “Whatever happens with regard to whether or not, or how, the special counsel might want to interview the president, there’s no reason to expect that would be combative.”
However, the Associated Press reported recently that some in the president’s inner circle are encouraging him to disregard his legal team’s conciliatory posture and publicly fight back against Mueller.
And despite the speculation, White House lawyer Ty Cobb is denying that there has been talk about a preemptive meeting between Trump and Mueller.
“There have been no internal or external discussions about this, whatsoever...It’s somebody’s fantasy,” Cobb told the Daily Caller.
He also indicated that Trump may not even need to be interviewed by Mueller about the probe.
