B.C. man punches out black bear after it followed toddler into home

GIBSONS, BRITISH COLUMBIA — A black bear wandering around a suburban neighborhood found itself on the wrong end of a fist when he entered a family home with children inside.
Mother Elery Froude was home with her two little kids when her 2-year-old son noticed the cuddly-looking stranger outside their front door. When the bear entered the home and got within a couple feet of the boy, the panicked mother grabbed her children and hid in a bedroom, while a male family friend distracted the intruder.
Froude told the CBC the bear made his way around the house, going through rooms and drooling all over the dining room table. When the family friend felt the bear threat had gone on long enough, he punched the bruin in the face. No doubt stunned, the young bear scampered out of the house. The bear did paw at the house and chew on the screen door from the outside, and later returned to terrorize the family from their garage. As a safety precaution, the police put the bear down because it clearly lacked the fear of humans, making him a risk to reoffend.
The BBC reports roughly 1,000 bears in British Columbia are euthanized each year for conflicts with people.
