Republican Representative Devin Nunes, who chairs the House Intelligence Committee, has refuted President Trump’s claim that Trump Tower was wiretapped.
During an appearance on Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace asked Nunes about the information received from the Justice Department on Friday pertaining to evidence of such surveillance; Nunes responded by saying, “The president doesn’t go and physically wiretap something. So if you take the president literally, it didn’t happen.”
When Wallace pressed him to confirm that there was no evidence of wiretapping at Trump Tower, Nunes said, “There was no FISA warrant that I am aware of...to tap Trump Tower.”
He added, “I think the concern that we have is that were there any other surveillance activities that were used--unmasking of names. For example, we know that General Flynn’s name was unmasked, and so, was there a physical wiretap of Trump Tower? No...”
Wallace then played a tape of Trump’s recent interview with Tucker Carlson; in it, the president says, “Wiretap covers a lot of different things. I think you’re going to find some very interesting items coming to the forefront over the next two weeks.”
When Wallace asked the lawmaker if he knew what Trump was referring to, Nunes said, “If there were other surveillance activities where names were picked up and then unmasking occurred...that is very possible…”
The controversy began on March 4 when Trump posted a series of tweets, the first of which read, “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!”
However, according to ABC News, “Trump offered no proof for his claims.”
Obama has denied any such activity, with his spokesman Kevin Lewis saying in a statement, “...neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any U.S. citizen. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false.”
