President Trump continues to claim that he was the victim of wiretapping, this time indicating to German Chancellor Angela Merkel that it was an experience they shared.
He made the comment during a joint press conference with the German leader on Friday.
A CNN report states, “The President was asked by a German reporter why his White House had cited a Fox News report that claimed that the British surveillance agency GCHQ had been used to wiretap Trump Tower during the election campaign.”
Trump responded by saying, while motioning to Merkel, “As far as wiretapping, I guess, by...this past [Obama] administration, at least we have something in common, perhaps.”
He was alluding to allegations that the U.S. National Security Agency had long been tapping the phones of Merkel and other top German officials--a claim which was made in a WikiLeaks report released in 2015.
After Trump made the comment and some audience members laughed, he added, “And just to finish your question, we said nothing.  All we did was quote a certain very talented legal mind who was the one responsible for saying that on television. I didn’t make an opinion on it….You shouldn’t be talking to me. You should be talking to Fox.”
The GCHQ has denied the claim, and Fox News has since said it has no evidence Trump was placed under any surveillance.
