White House press secretary Sean Spicer continues to vigorously defend President Trump’s claims that he was wiretapped by former President Obama.
During a press briefing on Thursday, Spicer was asked by ABC News' Jonathan Karl about the Senate Intelligence Committee’s remarks that “they see no indications Trump Tower was the subject of surveillance.”
Spicer responded by arguing that the media’s reporting about the committee’s findings has been unfavorably skewed against the administration.
Spicer also said, “I think the president's been very clear when he talked about this, and he talked about it last night.  When he talked about wiretapping, he meant surveillance and that there have been incidents that have occurred.”
According to Business Insider, “Spicer then cited a number of sources he believed backed up the White House's side of the argument. He listed reports from the New York Times, Heat Street, and Circa News, as well as a diatribe from unabashed pro-Trump Fox News host Sean Hannity.”
Eventually Karl asked if Trump continues to stand by his allegation, and Spicer confirmed “...he stands by it…”
On March 4, Trump posted a series of controversial tweets, the first of which read, “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!”
However, he did not provide any evidence to support his claim.
Obama has denied any such activity, with his spokesman Kevin Lewis saying in a statement, “...neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any U.S. citizen. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false.”
