White House press secretary Sean Spicer is being criticized for saying that seeing evidence of Obama’s alleged wiretapping is likely above his pay grade.
Jay Carney, former White House press secretary under the Obama administration, has called the statement into question, tweeting, “Actually, his ‘pay grade’ is the highest possible at WH - same as for chief of staff, national security and other senior personnel.”
At a Tuesday press conference, Spicer was asked if he’d actually laid eyes on any proof backing Trump’s wiretapping allegations.
Spicer replied, “As far as me, no. I'm not in a position that that would be regularly part of my daily duties for the President to sit down and go through that. That's probably a level above my pay grade. But as I’ve mentioned, I think the President believes that the appropriate place for this to be adjudicated is for the House and Senate intelligence committees who have the clearances, the staff, the processes, to go through this, look at it and report back.”
The accusations were made by Trump on Saturday morning via Twitter.
That stream of tweets included, “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!” and “How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!”
