Skydiving gone wrong: Husband arrested in attempted murder after wife's parachute fails - TomoNews

A British soldier has been arrested under suspicion of attempted murder after his estranged wife's parachute, which he had rented for her, malfunctioned.

Victoria Cilliers was skydiving at Netheravon Airfield in Wiltshire, England on Easter Sunday when her parachute malfunctioned. Victoria Cilliers was an experienced skydiver and used her training to survive the astounding 4,000-foot fall by slowing her descent from 100 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour.

Her husband, Emile Cilliers, from whom she had recently separated, was arrested for attempted murder after it was found that he had rented the parachute for her from the nearby airfield store.

Wiltshire police are investigating the incident and are on the lookout for the parts of the parachute called slinks that they say were missing. Slinks attach the canopy of the parachute to the harness.

Detective Inspector Paul Franklin was quoted in the Daily Mail saying: "This woman would have been dead if her chute hadn't partially opened, this meant her descent was slowed enough for her to survive the fall."

Emile Celliers has been released on bail pending a further investigation. His wife is recovering from serious injuries including a broken leg, broken ribs, a broken collarbone, and spinal damage.
