Smoke over Deir al Zor after the Syrian army destroyed a bridge used by Islamic State militants. It's part of a government air campaign to cut off the group's supply routes into eastern Syria.

The Sunni extremist group was able to seize control of the region in July, using weapons brought in from Iraq.

Deir al Zor wasn't the only place targeted by regime forces. This is the aftermath of air strikes in Aleppo according to this latest video posted to a social media website whose content Reuters cannot independently verify.

And in Quneitera, locals rush to find survivors among the piles of rubble and debris. Syrian President Bashar al Assad is determined to regain control of the country even as western powers say the situation is now so dire, they'll carry out their own strikes to stop militants whether Damascus approves or not.
