A 29-year old Moroccan man who thought he was carrying explosives for an attack has been arrested near the US Capitol as part of anti-terrorism investigation, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The FBI said in a statement on Friday that Amine el-Khalifi was arrested "in connection with a terrorism investigation".

The man believed he was on a suicide mission, using a vest packed with dummy explosives, according to the FBI.

It said: "Explosives the suspect allegedly sought to use in connection with the plot had been rendered inoperable by law enforcement and posed no threat to the public."
