Flash Floods Kill Eight, Thousands Evacuated in Southwest China

Heavy rain in China's southwestern Sichuan Province continues today. Flash floods have claimed at least eight lives and forced 170,000 more to evacuate.

Floods triggered by torrential rains continued to pound China's Sichuan Province on Thursday. According to state-run media, 170,000 people have been forced to evacuate... with 10,000 homes destroyed.

The rains and floods have affected 1.5 million people in the southwestern province, killing at least eight people with six more missing.

The cities of Bazhong and Guanyuan in northeastern Sichuan were hit the hardest, with nearly a foot of rain in some areas.

And water in a reservoir in Bazhong was 16 feet above the alarm level on Wednesday.

Rains have submerged more than 123,000 acres of farmland in the agricultural province, while mudslides have severed bridges and suspended travel on national and provincial highways.

The economic impact of the floods is estimated to be about 77 million U.S. dollars, according to the state-run news agency Xinhua.

The rains are set to continue through Thursday.
