Tomorrow is the 22nd anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre. As people prepare remembrance events in many places around the world, in Mainland China, the subject is still off limits. Rights groups say the Chinese regime has changed little since the massacre, as it continues to harshly suppress dissent.

It's been 22 years since the Chinese regime brutally crushed the Tiananmen democracy movement. The Chinese Communist Party has never taken responsibility for what happened when it sent military forces to end the student protests on June 4th, 1989.

More than two decades later, the regime continues to silence dissent. Many believe the CCP's latest crackdown that started in February this year, is the worst since the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

Hundreds, possibly thousands of protestors died in the Massacre—known in Chinese, as the June 4th Incident. Most were students demanding democracy and greater political freedom. According to Tiananmen student leader Tang Baiqiao, that's what Chinese people are still wishing for.

[Tang Baiqiao, Former Tiananmen Student Leader]:
"Now the Chinese public has the right and responsibility to resist tyranny. They can no longer allow the CCP to trample them at will. Chinese people, regardless of ethnicity, age or belief have the desire to end the dictatorship, so that the country can return to a form of civilization."

Many observers doubt the Chinese regime will heed those calls. Advocate group, Chinese Human Rights Defenders says the regime is now further from guaranteeing the rights of Chinese citizens than it's been in years, imposing the, quote, "most severe repression of dissent and activism" since Tiananmen.
