Tiananmen Square massacre: Hong Kong commemorates, Chinese officials try to forget

Model tanks could be seen in Hong Kong on Wednesday June 4 as the city-state prepared to commemorate the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.
Thousands are expected to take part in a rally to remember the government crackdown in Beijing which saw Chinese troops open fire on hundreds of protesters.
Security was tight in the Chinese capital for days leading up to the 25th anniversary and authorities allegedly detained several activists.
Police vans could be seen parked around Tiananmen Square and protests and memorials were reportedly prohibited.
China does not allow any public discussion of the events of June 3rd and 4th. Internet searches about the 1989 demonstrations were also said to have been censored.
The 1989 protests were the biggest anti-Communism rallies since the foundation of the People’s Republic in 1949.
After six weeks of peaceful demonstrations, authorities shot their way into the centre of Beijing. An official death toll for the crackdown has never been released.
