Mike Tyson became the youngest ever world heavyweight champion when he stopped Trevor Berbick in the second round and took his WBC belt in his 28th fight. Tyson was 20 years and 145 days old at the time, and had been a pro for just 20 months. In his next fight, Tyson was taken the distance by James Smith, but took his WBA belt. A few weeks later, Tyson took on former WBC champion Pinklon Thonas and dished out a six round beating.

Tony Tucker turned pro in 1980, and made steady progress against a succession of journeymen. He beat fading contender Jimmy Young on points in his 25th bout. A third round stoppage of fringe contender David Jaco, and a points win over James Broad helped propel Tucker to a fight for the vacant IBF title against Buster Douglas on the undercard of the Tyson-Thomas fight. Tucker overcame a slow start to stop Douglas in the tenth round and set up a unification fight with Tyson.
