Mike Tyson turned pro shortly before his 19th birthday in 1985. He won his first 19 bouts inside the distance, often in the first round. None of his opponents could cope with his speed, power, combination punching and sheer ferocity in the ring. His best win to date was a sixth round stoppage of fringe contender Jesse Ferguson. Tyson had proven he could destroy any journeyman he shared a ring with, and his management team wanted to step up the level of competition and see how he fared against more ambitious fighters.

James Tillis got off to a similar start to his pro career, winning his first 20 bouts. His best win was a seventh round stoppage of fading contender Ron Stander. Tillis challenged Mike Weaver for the WBA title in 1981, losing a close decision. He rebounded with a points win over Tillis became notorious for starting well in fights and fading in the middle rounds. After losses to Pinklon Thomas, Greg Page and several other leading contenders, Tillis was diagnosed with an allergy that was the cause of his lack of stamina. He was finally in good health and had a good training camp.
