Herol Graham became junior amateur world champion in 1976, beating John Mugabi in the final. He followed up by winning the senior ABA (British amateur) champoionship in 1977 and 1978. He turned pro later that year, fighting as a light middleweight. He won the British title in his 17th bout. Graham won the Commonwealth belt two fights later. He won the European crown in his 24th bout, knocking out Clement Tshinza in the second round. Three fights later, Graham stopped future IBF super middleweight champion Lindell Holmes in the fifth round. Graham moved up to middleweight, and won the British title and then stopping former WBA light middleweight champion Ayub Kalule in the tenth round for the European belt. He was 37-0 with 20 KOs.

Mark Kaylor turned pro in 1980 after narrowly missing out on a medal at the Olympics in Moscow that year. He won the British middleweight title in his 24th bout, knocking out Roy Gumbs in the fifth round. Kaylor suffered his first loss in his next fight, when he was disqualified in the ninth round against journeyman Tony Cerda. Two contests later, Kaylor suffered a more serious loss when Buster Drayton stopped him in the seventh round. Two fights later, he lost a fairly close decision to Tony Sibson for the British, Commonwealth and European titles. Kaylor won his next five bouts, and the best result was an eighth round knockout of Errol Christie.
