Nigel Benn vs Chris Eubank in a super middleweight world unification bout

Date: October 9, 1993

Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester

Benn stance: orthodox

Eubank stance: orthodox

After Nigel Benn lost his WBO middleweight title to Chris Eubank, he won his next ten bouts. The first five wins were against fringe contenders, and were fairly routine. In 1992, Benn beat Thulani Malinga in a very close split decision. In his next bout, Benn travelled to Italy and stopped WBC super middleweight champion Mauro Galvano in the fourth round. Benn stopped Nicky Piper in the 11th round of the first defence of his new title. He them won a rematch with Galvano on points and beat Lou Gent in the fourth round of his third defence.

Chris Eubank took the WBO middleweight belt from Nigel Benn thanks to a ninth round stoppage. After two fairly easy defences, Eubank won a majority decision against Michael Watson. Both fighters then moved up to super middleweight to contest the vacant WBO crown. Eubank knocked out atson in the 12th round, and Watson ended up in a coma with life changing injuries. Eubank then won his next six fights before a split decision draw with Ray Close. Some of the spite and aggression seemed to have left Eubank since his second win over Watson had nearly killed his opponent.
