Date: September 15, 1992

Venue: Everton Park Sports Centre, Liverpool

Ekubia stance: orthodox

Andy Holligan turned pro in 1987 and was 16-0 with 12 KOs at the time. Holligan had won the vacant British and Commonwealth titles by outpointing Ekubia in a hard scrap in the same venue 15 moths earlier. That points win had ended a run of seven consecutive stoppages. Holligan then defended his Commonwealth belt against Steve Larrimore and put both his titles on the line against Tony McKenzie, winning both early.

Tony Ekubia started his pro career with a loss on points in 1986 to Dean Eshelby. He then won his next 12 bouts, and picked up the Commonwealth light welterweight belt. He lost his next bout when he was stopped by fringe contender Victorio Belcher. Ekubia added the British title to his Commonwealth crown when he stopped Alex Dickson. He had a couple of routine wins defending his Commonwealth belt before losing on points to Holligan. Ekubia responded with a disqualification win over previously unbeaten Eamonn Loughran and a stoppage of Verdell Smith.
