Venue: Las Vegas Hilton, Las Vegas

Shavers stance: orthodox

Ken Norton won a final eliminator for the WBC heavyweight title when he beat Jimmy Young on a split decision in November 1977. When Leon Spinks beat Muhammad Ali in February 1978 to win that title, he refused to defend against Norton, so the WBC stripped him and gave the title to Norton. A few months later, Norton lost his WBC belt in a 15 round split decision to Larry Holmes. That bout is widely considered one of the best heavyweight title fights of all time. Norton rebounded five months later with a third round stoppage over sixth-ranked Randy Stephens. Up next was another WBC final eliminator.

Earnie Shavers had a puncher's chance against any opponent. Even Muhammad Ali felt his power while winning a close decision over 15 rounds. Shavers lost to a number of contenders, but his right hand was always a threat. After his failed challenge to Ali in September 1977, he shared a ring with Larry Holmes six months later. Holmes was chief sparring partner for Shavers, and his inside knowledge helped him to a points win over 12 rounds. Shavers then enjoyed three quick wins over journeyman before earning his place in this eliminator.
