Gerry Cooney vs S.T. Gordon in a ten round non-title fight

Date: March 17, 1978

Venue: The Aladdin, Las Vegas

Cooney stance: orthodox

Gordon stance: orthodox

Gerry Cooney was a natural left hander who adapted to the orthodox stance. He developed a sharp jab and punishing left hook, but his right hand was much weaker, and rarely used, except in combinations. Cooney was able to rely on his size (at 6'6" he was the biggest heavyweight of his generation) and strength, and his skills hardly developed past those of a good amateur. He had a habit of grimacing when he threw hard punches, and rarely punched to the body. In short, Cooney was very predictable.

The Irish-American turned pro in February 1977. He won his first ten fights, nine by KO, against carefully matched opponents, and his management team felt it was time to step up.

The next opponent was S.T. Gordon. He turned pro just a few days after Cooney. Gordon was a natural cruiserweight, and was six inches shorter than Cooney. His pro career did not get off to a good start, and by the time he faced Cooney, Gordon was 6-2 with five KOs. This was Cooney's first opponent with a winning record. Considering Gordon's later achievements in the ring, this was a significant upgrade in opposition. Both boxers were quite young when they faced each other - Cooney was 21 and Gordon was just 19.
