Birmingham headlines 25 September: Pedestrian killed in Smethwick crash named as police officer Sergeant Paul Frear

A pedestrian who died after being knocked over by a car in Smethwick has been named. Paul Frear, a Sergeant with West Midlands Police, passed away on Friday. In 2017 he won a Chief Constable's Award for providing first aid at the scene of a double stabbing. The victims both survived thanks to his swift action.

A man was charged with attempted murder after a man was shot at a shop in Holyhead Road last month. Shaquarn Reid is further charged with firearms possession offences, attempted robbery and resisting arrest.

Black Sabbath the Ballet opened its doors for the first time on Saturday and it was a starry opening night. Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Robert Plant, Bev Bevan and Ozzy Osbourne's wife Sharon Osbourne were all in attendance for the show at Birmingham Hippodrome.
