Big news coming in. According to reports, India has strongly rejected comments made by UN experts on Manipur. It has termed the comments by UN experts as “unwarranted, presumptive and misleading” and has asserted that the situation in the Northeast state is peaceful.
The Indian Permanent Mission To The UN claimed that the situation in Manipur is now peaceful and stable. “The Government is also committed to protecting the human rights of the people of India, including the people of Manipur,” it said.
The Permanent Mission Of India completely rejected the news release by UN experts, and has called it unwarranted, presumptive and misleading. It further tells that it betrays a complete lack of understanding on the situation in Manipur and the steps taken by the Government of India to address it.
According to news reports, this response came after a group of UN experts raised alarm about reports of “serious human rights violations and abuses” in Manipur, including alleged acts of sexual violence, extrajudicial killings, home destruction, forced displacement, torture and ill-treatment.
The press released titled ‘India: UN experts alarmed by continuing abuses in Manipur', by the Special Procedure Mandate Holders (SPMH) was rejected by Permanent Mission of India, and they expressed their disappointment and surprise that the SPMH choosed to issue press release without waiting for 60 days, which is the period for the Indian government to respond to a joint communication. They expressed hope that in the future, the SPMH would be “more objective” in their assessment, based on the facts.
In this news release, the UN experts had said they were “appalled"" by the reports and images of gender-based violence targeting hundreds of women and girls of all ages, and predominantly of the Kuki ethnic minority.
The experts further said that, “The alleged violence includes gang rape, parading women naked in the street, severe beatings causing death, and burning them alive or dead.”
The UN experts also pointed to an “inadequate humanitarian response” in the wake of the grave humanitarian situation in Manipur following the latest round of conflict between the predominantly Hindu Meitei and the predominantly Christian Kuki ethnic communities that erupted in May 2023.
The experts further urged the Indian government to step up relief efforts to those affected in Manipur. They asked the Indian government to take robust and timely action to investigate acts of violence and hold perpetrators to account, including public officials who may have aided and abetted the incitement of racial and religious hatred and violence.
