President Trump on Thursday suggested Democrats are pushing for a government shutdown and urged House Republicans to ensure that does not happen.
"House Democrats want a SHUTDOWN for the holidays in order to distract from the very popular, just passed, Tax Cuts. House Republicans, don't let this happen. Pass the C.R. TODAY and keep our Government OPEN!" Trump wrote on Twitter.
CNN reports that late on Wednesday getting enough votes appeared to be a significant challenge, with some House members expressing uncertainty that the party would be able to reach the necessary compromises before the Friday deadline.
House Speaker Paul Ryan told CNBC's Squawk Box, "We're just bringing a clean, what we call vanilla CR — no games, no sneaky things. Just a continuing resolution to get us through this moment to get us into next year. It's as clean and simple as possible."
The short-term funding will run through January 19.
