00:00 Is it fair to say this window has been unusual in terms of personnel?
00:03 I was wondering if you could elaborate on that.
00:06 Has the absence of a director of football made things more complicated?
00:09 Is that what you meant?
00:11 Well, yeah, we don't have a...
00:13 Yeah, so, yeah, it's not usual.
00:15 It's unusual if you look at how the way the clubs worked previously,
00:20 that's always been in place.
00:22 And most clubs, that's...
00:23 So, yeah, so that means it's different,
00:26 which I assume won't be the case moving forward.
00:31 Do you think it's kind of slowed things down, potentially?
00:34 No, I just say it's unusual, it's different,
00:37 you know, because when you're doing something
00:40 and there's already a process in place,
00:43 then you know how it's going to work,
00:45 whereas this is a new manager and a sporting director,
00:48 so it is, I think, for anyone would say it's unusual.
00:52 You wouldn't call this...
00:54 Usually you'll have one or the other,
00:55 you know, maybe a new coach or maybe a new sporting director,
00:57 but there's processes there, here you've got both.
00:59 So you're going into a window where, you know,
01:02 a lot of things that are usually embedded
01:06 in this kind of period aren't there.
01:08 Are you expecting that situation to be resolved sort of pace?
01:13 Yeah, yeah, I think there's no doubt it will, yeah.
01:17 I mean, I think that's the club's...
01:18 definitely the club's plan.
01:19 And...
01:20 But I thought, you know, I think it's fair to say that
01:25 going into this window,
01:26 there was no point rushing that kind of appointment,
01:29 particularly with a new manager in it.
01:30 And I think the kind of thinking behind it was that,
01:35 you know, probably the best way to charter
01:39 this unusual process is to just have, you know,
01:42 less sort of involvements with new people as possible.
01:48 You know, so far, like I said,
01:53 the evidence, when you see the players we've brought in,
01:55 I think we've navigated it pretty well.
01:57 Matt.
01:59 Are you going to tell us what's happened to Hugo Reiss?
02:04 No, not really.
02:05 I mean, again, I haven't been involved at all
02:07 in that process because it's really a decision for Hugo,
02:11 the club and, you know, whatever decision he makes
02:15 for himself.
02:16 So it's not like it's something that's kind of
02:20 in my sphere of responsibility at the moment.
02:24 If he's still with you,
02:25 is he one of those who's going to be left out of the squad?
02:28 He seems a little bit different to the others, for example,
02:30 who you'd probably say would fight for that place.
02:34 Yeah, I think I've already said,
02:34 I'm not going to have sort of three sort of
02:36 first team goalkeepers on my list.
02:38 I think I said that two weeks ago.
02:39 And particularly, you know,
02:41 when we're talking about the homegrown quota,
02:43 it doesn't make sense for us to have two
02:44 foreign goalkeepers on the list.
02:46 So, and that Hugo knows that.
02:48 And I think I said that at least two weeks ago.
02:51 And are you able to say, is this his decision?
02:53 Is it his drive for a change?
02:55 Again, I mean, Hugo can speak for himself.
03:00 You can ask Hugo,
03:01 but I think that was fairly evident from what I understand.
03:05 But I haven't had anything different being told to me.
03:09 Jack.
03:11 As you said, as well as speaking to Alistair,
03:14 I think about how there's been a lot of change
03:16 in terms of the squad this season.
03:17 A bit busy, a lot of things, a lot of outs.
03:20 I think it wasn't going to be like that
03:21 in the first week forward.
03:22 Was it more than you anticipated?
03:24 Or do you think this was exactly what you needed?
03:27 Again, I come in sort of,
03:31 you know, in terms of my expectations of not
03:35 sort of locking myself into any sort of
03:39 certain course of action where I think
03:42 you have to have change.
03:43 'Cause sometimes I've gone into clubs and thought,
03:44 you know, not much needs to change.
03:46 But ultimately, again, I think I said last week
03:49 that change means change.
03:52 You know, we needed to change personnel.
03:54 We needed to change,
03:55 the club decided to change direction in terms of,
03:59 you know, the football we wanted to play.
04:02 I decided that we needed new coaching staff.
04:04 So there has to be change.
04:06 The reality of it is this team finished eighth last year.
04:09 So I think that's kind of gives you an indication of
04:14 where the club was at
04:18 and what it thought it needed.
04:21 And I've taken that on board
04:23 and I haven't been blocked in any sort of way
04:26 in making the changes that I've wanted to.
04:28 And that's what we'll continue to do.
04:31 It has been a lot, a lot of change.
04:33 And, you know, whether that's,
04:35 it's probably not ideal in the short term,
04:37 but the fact that we've handled that well
04:40 and the playing group handled that well
04:42 is a good sign, I think.
04:43 - There's obviously been lots of moving parts.
04:44 Do you enjoy this part of the job this time of the year?
04:47 Or do you just focus on the coaching?
04:51 - No, like I said, I love this part of the process
04:54 because, you know, this is,
04:57 you know how challenging it is.
05:00 It's really difficult.
05:01 You know, there's going to be, like I said,
05:06 many bumps on the road where everything that you do
05:08 gets questioned and decisions get questioned
05:11 and all these kinds of things.
05:12 And I love that, you know, I love that process.
05:14 I mean, when things are going well,
05:16 you obviously enjoy it, enjoy the success.
05:18 But usually when you get to that point,
05:21 you reflect back on the beginnings
05:24 and you realise that none of it would have been possible
05:27 if you didn't sort of stay strong and true
05:30 to what you want to do, right,
05:31 at the beginnings of things.
05:32 And like I said, this has been, I don't know,
05:36 it's probably the fifth or sixth rebuild in a row.
05:40 I've done every job I've gone into
05:41 and I've loved every minute of it.
05:43 I enjoy it.
05:44 - Dave.
05:45 - Just to follow up on what you were talking about,
05:47 just the structures in terms of recruitment.
05:50 Before your time at Parity,
05:52 can you just sort of explain a little bit,
05:55 just for our readers as much as anyone else,
05:57 who's kind of taken on those responsibilities
05:59 and how it sort of works, a bit of detail there.
06:02 - Mainly just, I mean, obviously I'm taking a fairly
06:05 big lead in terms of,
06:07 I'm the one that's providing the information
06:09 in terms of what we need.
06:10 And then it, you know, it goes to our scouting department
06:13 and there's a whole group of people there
06:15 who kind of put the information together
06:17 and give me the kind of lists that I need to do.
06:22 Some of it is just players who come on the market
06:28 and then again, they're given to me to have a look at,
06:30 do I think they'll fit the profile?
06:32 Do I give them the feedback?
06:34 And then that gets passed on to the people
06:37 who do the sort of negotiation side of it.
06:42 - So, away from everything else,
06:44 do you have a comeback date for Bansal Kerr?
06:46 - Yeah, not a defined one, but he's getting closer.
06:52 I think, if I had to make a call,
06:56 probably around November time,
06:57 it would be looking to sort of reintegrate him back into it.
07:00 So he's ticking all the boxes so far.
07:03 He's really keen.
07:05 I mean, he came to see me yesterday wanting the train
07:07 and within a minute I had one of the medical team
07:11 running behind him to collar him and drag him out.
07:14 So he's definitely keen.
07:17 And it'll be great to get him back
07:18 'cause I mean, obviously, you know,
07:20 his contribution when he first came to the club
07:23 was outstanding.
07:24 So in many respects,
07:25 he'll be like another new signing for us, which is great,
07:29 but we won't rush it.
07:31 It's obviously a significant injury.
07:32 So probably looking around that time scale.
07:36 - Paul, we'll finish with you, please.
07:37 - Obviously, having a sporting director here
07:40 give you a bit more freedom in a strange way,
07:42 since one of us was to potentially disagree with you,
07:46 or I knew you had freedom to act in other words?
07:51 - Oh, I've never felt encumbered with whoever I've worked.
07:56 I usually get my way, so it doesn't really worry me.
08:00 But you know, I don't have total control
08:01 because obviously I have control of one side of it,
08:04 of this is the player I think fits a profile,
08:07 but you know, there's a whole range of other things
08:10 that can come into it from a financial perspective,
08:11 from all these other kinds of things
08:13 that I have zero control.
08:14 So then obviously other people then take over then.
08:18 So it's not like I've, you know,
08:19 just can go and do what I want.
08:21 But look, it's one of the things I'm really strong on.
08:24 I just wouldn't see the sense in bringing a player in
08:29 that I can think fit.
08:30 I don't care who was giving him to me
08:32 or who was sort of putting him forward.
08:33 Because I think ultimately,
08:39 whatever happens, I'm going to take the responsibility.
08:42 I would never say that, you know,
08:43 I didn't sign this player, he's not one of mine.
08:46 I would never do that because I think
08:47 once a player comes in the club, he's mine.
08:49 That's how I see it.
08:51 So if I'm going to take that responsibility,
08:53 then I want to say, you know,
08:54 and I like working with a sporting director
08:58 because they do most of that sort of legwork
09:02 that I just don't have the time for.
09:04 And you know, when you've got a good sporting director
09:06 and you work together, you know,
09:08 they see the game through your eyes and they say,
09:10 "Well, okay, this guy's going to be perfect for you."
09:13 And you look at it and you go, "Brilliant.
09:14 I don't even have to worry about it, I know."
09:17 And, but I'm still going to have the say.
09:20 Because like I said, when the question inevitably
09:23 comes around a signing,
09:24 I will never say that it wasn't mine.
09:26 So if I'm going to take that stance,
09:28 I want the final say in it.
09:30 - Do you remember before you came,
09:31 you told Spurs that you were used to getting in the way?
09:34 Do you remember the response?
09:35 - No, I don't.
09:36 I don't feel I need to.
09:38 I think, you know, I think-
09:39 - I hope it is.
09:40 - Well, I hope it is.
09:41 I don't say it in an arrogant way.
09:44 I'd like to think that that gives people comfort
09:46 that, like I said, I'm going to take responsibility for it.
09:49 You know, I think that's my role.
09:51 So it's not like I go around just telling people what to do.
09:54 I just, I want people to know, to be at ease
09:57 that whatever decisions we make as a collective,
10:01 I will take responsibility for.
10:03 - It's the moment you were obviously going to have
10:04 to say in the press,
10:05 what's your message to the media then, right?
10:08 - Not necessarily.
10:10 What I will have a say about is that, you know,
10:13 whoever that may be,
10:15 is that they get to know me and understand me.
10:18 That's, I'm not going to point the person.
10:21 I'm certainly not going to get involved in that process.
10:24 But, you know, again, the club, I think,
10:27 have already sort of got a clear idea of the way I work
10:32 and the way I think and the way I want my teams to play.
10:34 And whoever that person is, it'll be, you know, him.
10:39 It's my role then to get him to understand me
10:41 and see the game through my eyes.
10:42 - Okay.
10:43 - Do you have any plans to stop Mike from starting work?
10:46 - Oh mate, come on.
10:47 I've had enough of my plate, mate.
10:50 I did like, that's not on my brief, mate.
10:52 Sorry.
10:53 - Thanks guys. Thank you.
10:54 - I apologise, Laurent.
10:56 - That's all right, mate.
10:57 - I'll try and be confident.
