00:00 Good afternoon everybody and welcome to St George's Park for this media conference with
00:25 new England caller Eddie Lachetier. We'll start with the live section with Rob Dorsett
00:30 from Sky Sports News. Are you ready Rob?
00:32 Eddie, lovely to see you. Congratulations first and foremost.
00:35 Thank you.
00:36 Big moment for you. How special is it?
00:38 Yeah, it's amazing I think. A really proud moment for me, my family and friends. It's
00:43 been quite the journey here, you know, a lot of ups and downs. I think it's obviously the
00:47 pinnacle for an English player to get called up for a senior team. So I'm really happy
00:51 to be here and just looking forward to the week ahead.
00:54 You know this place so well. Under 18s, under 19s, under 20s, all-time leading goalscorer
00:59 for England in the 21s. But does this feel different being here with the senior team?
01:04 Yeah, obviously I've been here a few times but it does feel different. It's that extra
01:08 special, you know, I think you're here, you're mixing obviously with great players, obviously
01:12 with a great manager as well. So it's just that sense of pride to be here and, you know,
01:16 progress through the age groups is obviously a nice feeling and obviously to get here is
01:19 a nice step. So, like I said, I'm really happy to be here, proud to be here and looking forward
01:23 to helping the team.
01:25 Does it make it a bit easier though, the fact that you know the environment so well, you
01:29 know a lot of the staff around the place?
01:31 Yeah, of course. Obviously I've trained with the seniors a couple of times during that
01:35 period. So, no, it makes it really nice. Obviously I know some of the players, either playing
01:39 with them or playing against them. So a few friendly and familiar faces always help settle
01:43 in. But all the boys and staff are really nice and really supportive. So I felt at home
01:47 once I've come in and, like I said, I'm really looking forward to the weekend.
01:51 You're eligible to play for Ghana as well, of course. And I think they've made it pretty
01:55 clear they were desperate for you to pledge your allegiance to them, shall we say. Was
02:00 it ever an option in your mind?
02:02 Yeah, I think obviously both sides are obviously always an option. I think naturally coming
02:06 through the academy at England, obviously you have that aspiration to play here. And
02:10 like I said, once the call-up was there and the offer was on the table, it was really
02:13 hard to turn down. And something which I felt was obviously a natural progression for myself
02:17 at this stage. And I felt now was a good time to make that step. So, obviously I'm really
02:22 happy to be here and proud to be here. Like I said, hopefully I can go on and help the
02:26 team this week and get some caps.
02:28 What's it been like training with Harry Kane? Has he had anything to say to you yet?
02:32 Yeah, it's been really good. Obviously he's a world-class striker. Today was my first
02:36 session. So I'm sure I'll be in his ear all week, getting tips and learning. I think that's
02:41 another great opportunity to come away, learn and improve yourself and see what other strikers
02:46 and top strikers do, how they prepare for games. So I'm really looking forward to the
02:50 week. Obviously he's a great player and hopefully we can do well and help the team this week.
02:55 Easier for you to spend some time with him because he's not a Tottenham player?
02:58 Yeah, I think it makes the conversation a little bit easier obviously now that he's
03:02 made the move over. But like I said, he's a fantastic player and obviously wish him
03:06 all the best in his next chapter.
03:08 You've had lots of appearances for Arsenal last season but a lot of them were a sub.
03:12 That must have been more difficult for you. But you've been first choice for Mikel Arteta
03:16 so far this season, three out of four anyway. What does that do for your confidence?
03:21 Yeah, I think it's great. I've worked really hard. I've had good moments last season
03:25 when I came in and played and had a run. Obviously this season started three out of four games.
03:29 I've been happy with my performance and obviously scored a few goals and helped the team.
03:33 It's really good as a striker. You want that kind of consistency to be playing week in,
03:37 week out. I think with every game you improve, you learn more and you get more comfortable.
03:41 Obviously as a striker you need that rhythm, that kind of game time, that play.
03:45 I've enjoyed it. I'm really, really happy to be playing and getting minutes and hopefully
03:49 can continue and I can continue to help the team.
03:52 As well as that, you come into the camp off the big boost of that big win over Manchester
03:56 United, which the manager and the fans and the players seem to think was a big one.
04:02 Just how big was it? Just how important was it?
04:04 Yeah, it was massive. Obviously United, we know the kind of history we have in that game
04:08 and we know how important those three points are and all three points are.
04:11 It was a really great moment for us to get the win and do it in that fashion.
04:15 Last minute winners was obviously really good.
04:17 It's set up a nice feel, obviously going into the international break so we can come back and carry on that form.
04:23 Eddie, when you heard the news, where were you and what was your reaction?
04:29 I was at home, you know. Luckily we had the day off so I was at home and thankfully all
04:34 my family were at my house and one of my mates. Obviously when I got the text it was surreal.
04:39 I'm usually a calm guy but I did lose a bit of composure for a tad second.
04:44 That was an amazing moment. Obviously all my family were really emotional.
04:47 Like I said, it's been a long journey. It's worked really hard to get up to this point.
04:51 It's really nice to have that step of recognition.
04:54 Can you remember what you said? How surprised were you?
04:57 You know what, I can't remember what I exactly said. I don't think I said much.
05:02 I was just looking at my phone, checking every detail to make sure it said selected.
05:06 That was really nice. Obviously my parents were really emotional because they sacrificed a lot for me to get here.
05:13 It was just really nice to see that kind of happiness and that pride on their faces.
05:17 I know that it's been a special moment to be able to share that with them.
05:21 Obviously you had the record goal score of 20-21.
05:25 How confident are you that you'll be able to make that step up and what do you think
05:29 the biggest differences will be playing at senior level?
05:32 I think I'm pretty confident. I'm playing for a great club, a big club myself at Arsenal.
05:38 These tough games will be a different and new experience.
05:42 One that I'll relish and cherish.
05:45 It's just about doing as well as I can, showing my quality this week
05:48 and hopefully get an opportunity to go out there and help the team.
05:53 What did Bakaya Sakho say to you when you received your call-up?
05:59 He was buzzing. He was so happy for me and all the other boys at Kony and staff as well.
06:04 He told me during the week he thinks I have a good chance of making the squad.
06:08 It was fingers crossed. When I had that call-up and I was able to tell him the next day,
06:13 he was really happy for me. Like I said, it's great to be here.
06:16 Obviously being here with some familiar faces always helps.
06:18 You said Bakaya said you were in a good chance of making the squad.
06:21 Maybe to some people you were a surprise inclusion.
06:24 Did you think it was coming yourself?
06:26 Yes, I try to focus on myself and on the present and my club.
06:31 I feel like if you're doing the right thing with that club, which I think I have been doing
06:34 and hopefully I can continue to do, those things will naturally come.
06:37 Like I said, it was a pleasant surprise.
06:39 One that I've been working hard for, not just this season, but throughout the years.
06:43 I think step by step you get closer and closer.
06:46 You had a little bit of a wait from England in the 21s to make your step up.
06:50 Do you think that will actually help you?
06:51 You're more established as a player and you play a lot of senior football now.
06:55 Yes, I think I'm a much better player than I was two or three years ago.
06:59 That's really nice. I think I'm coming in at a good time and in a good moment.
07:04 I feel confident and I feel ready. I know I'm going to continue to improve.
07:08 That's the thing. I'm still young. I'm humble enough to know I'm not the finished article.
07:12 Coming away with these players and being able to show my quality and learn from them
07:15 will be good for me to improve and continue to take those steps in my career.
07:19 Having Harry Kane ahead of you is always really hard to compete with.
07:22 There's a group of strikers behind, isn't there?
07:24 Callum Wilson and Olly Watkins always trying to get in there.
07:27 Do you see yourself within that group and you have what it takes to keep in the squad?
07:31 Yes, I think once you're here, the aim is to continue to come in.
07:35 I think that happens through good performances at club level, being consistent
07:39 and helping the team as much as possible.
07:41 I definitely believe in myself and I know if I get the opportunity, I'll be able to hopefully show that.
07:46 Hi Eddie. I know how much confidence you have in yourself, but you said you know you can improve.
07:51 What is it you think you can improve on to get the consistency you want at club
07:56 and then to make sure you get called up regularly?
07:58 I think it's just in everything. Every department of a striker, I think it's a position which comes with age.
08:05 I think obviously, through experience, you learn and you get better. You learn the moments, how to participate,
08:11 how to do what in certain scenarios and against different teams.
08:15 I think with time and obviously getting more experience and more game time at club football
08:20 and getting that confidence and more goals, obviously will naturally boost you into the good position.
08:25 I think with that and obviously with age, I'll improve and continue to take those steps.
08:30 Have you got a list of questions for Harry Kane when you do get to pull him aside?
08:33 I might have a few notes in my phone. Let's see. Like I said, it's just good to be here.
08:38 Not just Harry, there's loads of great attacking players. Naturally, just being able to be around them
08:43 and obviously see what they do and what little things I do differently and where I can kind of
08:48 steal a few things will obviously be nice to experience.
08:51 Thank you.
08:52 Hi Eddie. Everyone talks about obviously now you're competing with Harry Kane,
08:59 but at club level you're now playing with Gabriel Jesus.
09:02 Has that made you a better player, training and playing with someone of his quality?
09:05 Yeah, of course. I think Gabriel is a fantastic player and obviously a great guy off the pitch.
09:09 He gets on really well. Obviously, it's nice to be competing with someone of that standard
09:14 and certainly going to do good things for myself and him.
09:16 We both know that we both want to do the same thing, which is help the team, contribute, score goals.
09:21 I think naturally we push each other in training, we push each other in games, we're competing.
09:27 Obviously we know that and it's healthy and friendly competition.
09:30 We know that sometimes we're going to both play together, sometimes I might play, sometimes he might play.
09:34 But we have that good relationship that we always support each other.
09:37 Like we said, we all want the same thing, which is to help Arsenal.
09:40 So I'm sure hopefully it'll be a great season for the both of us.
09:43 You made your Arsenal debut six years ago, I think.
09:45 Like you said, I think you're probably the youngest person in the room to be fair.
09:48 That was a long time ago and since then we've seen Pacquiao and Emile come through at the academy
09:53 after you and get into the team and then make the England team and play for England.
09:57 Did at any point were you ever worried that your ship had sailed out of guard
10:01 when you seen these young guys coming through before you?
10:03 No, I think obviously I'm still young.
10:05 Obviously everyone's journey is different.
10:07 So I think that's the thing these days.
10:10 I think everyone needs to just focus on their own story and their own journey
10:13 and not look at anyone else's.
10:15 I think our career paths have been totally different.
10:17 We've had different opportunities at different times.
10:20 Like I said, I've always been someone that trusts in good timing and trusting myself
10:24 and believe in the process that is step by step.
10:27 It might not always happen exactly when you want it,
10:29 but if you keep putting in the work and doing the right things, it'll come.
10:33 I believe it's all in good timing and when it's your time, it'll be your time.
10:38 Finally, someone else you've travelled here with is Declan Rice.
10:41 Did we see on Sunday why he's worth £105m?
10:45 It's not for me to judge how much he's worth,
10:48 but he's a great player and a great lad.
10:50 He's been an amazing addition to the team.
10:53 I think he had a wonderful performance.
10:55 Not just the goal, obviously, it's all performance.
10:57 Like I said, he's going to help us so much
10:59 and we're really happy to have him in the team.
11:02 For me personally, I get on with him really well.
11:04 It's nice to have him around the dressing room.
11:06 Like I said, hopefully he can have a big season and help us a lot this year.
11:09 Michael Ford to James Arleigh.
11:11 Hi Eddie.
11:13 You've spoken before about Ian Wright giving you bits of advice throughout your career.
11:17 Would you describe him as a mentor?
11:19 Has he been that influential for you?
11:21 I think he's given me a lot of advice over the years.
11:25 There's been other guys as well, obviously Thierry,
11:27 a lot of ex-bros are in and around the environment and the training ground.
11:31 I try to pick up as much as I can from anyone.
11:34 Players and strikers of his calibre who have had careers like that,
11:37 it's always nice to speak and learn and bounce ideas off.
11:40 It's been nice and it's been supportive.
11:42 I'm grateful for all the ex-bros that have been in touch,
11:45 that have helped me and allowed me to continue taking steps in my career.
11:49 Ian, in particular, he's played for England,
11:52 he's made the transition that you're about to make.
11:54 Have you spoken to him about playing for England's senior team?
11:58 Not yet to be fair.
11:59 I spoke to some, obviously we did a shoot not too long ago.
12:02 I was just speaking about the start to the season,
12:04 saying how well I've done.
12:06 I'm sure we'll speak over time and I'm grateful for all the support I get from Ian and all the others as well.
12:12 Now you're here, how much is being a part of the Euro 2024 squad a target for you now?
12:20 Of course I think it's a target for all of us.
12:23 Once you get here you want to stay here and be here consistently.
12:26 It's going to give me that extra motivation throughout the year.
12:29 Obviously I know we've got to focus on what's ahead,
12:31 the games coming up and getting qualified first.
12:34 Doing well for my club, naturally those things will help me get to where I want to get to.
12:38 Obviously if I do the right things I can be a part of that.
12:42 Thanks James.
12:43 OK we'll end the live section there and move on to a section of blogging.
