In a heart-wrenching tale of love gone awry, Golaghat, Assam, became the stage for a harrowing crime that shook the community to its core. On July 24th, the lives of a 24-year-old woman, Sanghamitra Ghosh, and her parents, Sanjeev and Junu Ghosh, were abruptly cut short in a brutal act of violence. The shocking incident shed light on a turbulent love story that began on social media and took a deadly turn.

Sanghamitra’s husband, Nazibur Rahman Bora, surrendered himself to the police with his nine-year-old baby and confessed to killing his wife and parents-in-law. According to police reports, the couple’s love story began when mechanical engineer Nazibur met Sanghamitra through Facebook during the 2020 Covid lockdown. What started as a romantic story eventually turned into a toxic relationship, resulting in multiple cases registered against each other.

After a brief romance in June 2020, the couple eloped to Kolkata in October. Despite her parents' disapproval of the relationship, Sanghamitra was brought back home, but it was too late as the couple had already legalized their marriage in the Kolkata court. While at home, Sanghamitra’s parents filed a case accusing her of theft, resulting in her arrest and a month of judicial custody before eventual bail.

In January 2022, the already married couple eloped for the second time, this time to Chennai where they resided for four months. After Sanghamitra became pregnant, she and her husband Nazibur returned to Golaghat and decided to stay at her husband’s place.

The couple became parents to a boy in November of the same year, but the bliss didn't last long as, four months later, Sanghamitra left the house, accusing and filing a case against Nazibur, alleging torture. However, bail was granted within 28 days.

Since his release, Nazibur tried to meet his son, but Sanghamitra’s parents opposed it. On Monday, 24th July, things took a dark and grim turn, where tensions between both parties reached their brink. This resulted in Nazibur murdering his wife and her parents. He left the crime scene with his 9-month-old son and reached the police station, where he confessed to his crimes.

Taking matters into hand, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma decided to pay a visit to the victim’s younger sibling. He assured them that actions would be taken against the accused, and strict punishment would be ensured. The investigation has been ongoing, and a case has been filed against the accused under sections 302 (murder) and 448 (trespassing) of the Indian Penal Code.

CM Sarma accused the 25-year-old perpetrator was a drug addict and involved in trafficking contraband substances. The CM also made a statement saying, ""Love Jihad is a reality"" as the deceased family was Hindu, and the accused came from the Muslim community. This statement caused a controversial stir among some people.
