New Group Exhibition - Undercurrents, which is part of the One Ocean Hub research project.
Climate change, commercial overfishing, plastic pollution and deep sea mining are serious threats to the ocean. In global debates about these hazards, however the personal stories of those most affected are often unheard. Over the last four years, researchers at The Glasgow School of Art have been collaborating with artists, grassroot community groups and academics in Africa, the Pacific and the UK to explore emotional connections that communities have with the ocean. The outcomes of this work will be unveiled in the Reid Gallery at The Glasgow School of Art on 15 April 2023.
Cebo Mvubu – artist from South Africa’s Keiskamma Art Project who have made a giant tapestry;
Helen Naupa researcher and storyteller from the Erromango Cultural Association in Vanuatu, who have made a children’s capturing indigenous stories and knowledge
Freda Wickham –a project manager from the Association of Solomon Islanders in Creative Fashion who have made wearable art
Eric Otchere Academic and film-maker from the University Cape Coast which has made a film to be shown in Undercurrents
Amie Kulaya – Project Adviser/Contributor to Straight Family a collective of emerging performing artists from marginalised communities in Accra, Ghana who present song and video.
