Final Cryptic Nights of 2022 announced at CCA Glasgow

Glasgow-based French/American Artist Lene de Montaigu presents live concert and installation Piano Sketches

Free live performance on Wednesday 2 November and free installation Thursday 3 November

Glasgow-based producing art house, Cryptic, are delighted to announce the final Cryptic Nights of 2022, taking place at CCA Glasgow on the 2 and 3 of November.

Now in its thirteenth year, Cryptic Nights is a regular series of events presented by Cryptic supporting emerging artists to cross creative boundaries with live music, visual and sonic art, film and new media. Since 2019 Cryptic Nights has presented over 300 Scottish-based artists including Anna Meredith, Rachel MacLean, Oliver Coates, Yann Seznec, Hammy Sgìth and SHHE.

Cryptic Nights 2022 finishes in style with Piano Sketches, a free live performance and installation by French/American artist and recent Glasgow School of Art graduate Lene de Montaigu.

This sonic sculpture is a digitally and acoustically interactive piano rebuilt from recycled and reimagined parts. All of its missing pieces were measured, determined, reimagined and reproduced through digital tools. On Wednesday 2 November, audiences are invited to join Lene as she plays the piano in an exclusive one-off live concert. From the moment she leaves the piano, it is available for the public to observe and listen to, on Thursday 3 November,

The recycled piano will be first played by Lene, introducing her own creative interpretation of the instrument’s voice. This performance is a work in itself, shared with an audience for one time only. From the moment she leaves the piano, this same piano is available for the public to observe and listen to.

The reimagined piano creates both acoustic and digital sound, with certain hammers triggering sound samples from online media. Simultaneously, the keyboard triggers acoustic sound from the harp using the repurposed mechanism of the once obsolete piano.

Both the one-off concert and the installation are free to attend.
