1861 में बिहार के भागलपुर जिले के सुल्तानगंज में इस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के रेल निर्माण कार्य के ट्रैक बिछाने का काम चल रहा था। तब ब्रिटिश रेलवे इंजीनियर हैरिस ने धातु की मूर्ति के पैरों को जमीन में देखा। उस मूर्ति को ध्यांन से खोदा गया और वह हैरान रह गया। अब यह शानदार तांबे की मूर्ति बर्मिंघम, इंग्लैंड के संग्रहालय में दिखाई देती है। पता नहीं ऐसी कितनी बुद्ध मूर्ति जहाज से विदेश गई हैं।
सुल्तानगंज में प्राप्त बुद्ध की मूर्ति - गुप्त काल की है, जो तांबे की बनी है। प्रतिमा 500 और 700 ईस्वी के बीच की है यह 2.3 मीटर ऊंचा और 1 मीटर चौड़ा है और इसका वजन 500 किलोग्राम से अधिक है। यह ईस्ट इंडियन रेलवे के निर्माण के दौरान बिहार के भागलपुर जिले के सुल्तानगंज में पाई गई थी।
सुल्तानगंज के सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता पंकज पासवान पदयात्रा पर निकले हैं। उनकी यह यात्रा सुल्तानगंज से नई दिल्ली के पीएमओ कार्यालय तक होगी। वे 1861 में रेलवे लाइन के निर्माण के दौरान महात्मा बुद्ध की तांबे की प्रतिमा को लंदन से वापस लाने के लिए भारत सरकार से आग्रह कर रहे हैं।
In 1861, at Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district of Bihar, the work of laying tracks for the railway construction work of the East India Company was going on. Then the British railway engineer Harris saw the feet of the metal statue in the ground. That idol was carefully dug up and he was surprised. Now this magnificent copper statue is visible in the Museum of Birmingham, England. Don't know how many such Buddha idols have gone abroad by ship.
The Buddha statue found at Sultanganj – belongs to the Gupta period, made of copper. The statue is dated between 500 and 700 AD. It is 2.3 meters high and 1 meter wide and weighs over 500 kg. It was found at Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district of Bihar during the construction of the East Indian Railway.
Social worker Pankaj Paswan of Sultanganj has set out on a padyatra. His journey will be from Sultanganj to the PMO office in New Delhi. They have been urging the Government of India to bring back the copper statue of Mahatma Buddha from London in 1861 during the construction of the railway line.
