A judge has granted Phoebe Bridgers’ motion to dismiss the $3.8 million defamation lawsuit brought against her by Chris Nelson. Nelson, the owner of Sound Space recording studio, sued Bridgers over comments she made about him on Instagram in October 2020. In the post, Bridgers called on people thinking of using Sound Space studios to read a post by Nelson's ex-girlfriend which accused him of abuse. Bridgers claimed that she could “personally verify much of the abuse (grooming, stealing, violence)". In the lawsuit, Nelson claimed that Bridgers “maliciously and intentionally” posted the statements as a “revenge plot” for his ex. A judge granted the musician’s anti-SLAPP motion which prevents people from using lawsuits to intimidate those exercising their right to free speech. A spokesperson for Bridgers says she feels “vindicated that the Court recognized this lawsuit as frivolous and without merit”.
