गाय के गोबर से गोवर्धन पर्वत बनाया जाता है. हिंदू धर्म के अनुसार भगवान कृष्ण ने गोवर्धन पूजा की थी और इंद्र देवता अहंकार तोड़ा था. गोवर्धन पूजा का चलन आज से नहीं बल्कि श्री कृष्णा के द्वापरयुग से चला आ रहा है. श्री कृष्ण को गायों और बछड़ो से बहुत प्रेम था. उस समय गोकुलवासी इंद्रदेव की पूजा करते थे. कृष्णा ने तर्क करते हुए कहा की इंद्रदेव हमारे पालनहार नहीं है, बल्कि गोवर्धन पर्वत है. क्योंकि यहीं ग्वालों के गायों को चारा मिलता है, जिनसे लोग दूध, घी, मक्खन बनाते हैं. आईए जानते है इस दिन गाय का गोबर न मिले तो क्या करें ।
