Janmashtami means the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, this festival is celebrated with great pomp across the country including Gokul-Mathura. On this day Bhajan, Jagran and Jagrata take place in the temples. Then at 12 o'clock the devotees break the fast after worshiping the Lord. According to the Hindu calendar, Krishna Kanhaiya was born in Mathura at midnight on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month. On this day people keep fast, worship throughout the day, make bhog. There is a festive atmosphere in the houses, devotees decorate the palanquin of Shri Krishna and floats are also taken out.
