It is said that on the day of Mahashivaratri , the person who worships Lord Shiva with bell leaves and awakes during the night and chants the Lord's mantras, Lord Shiva gives him joy and salvation. Also on the day of Mahashivaratri, many people are willing to worship Lord Shiva during the Mahanishith period to attain specific attainments. At the same time, some such things have been told in Vishnu Purana that he is soon pleased by offering to God.

कहते हैं महाशिवरात्रि के दिन जो व्यक्ति बेल के पत्तों से शिव जी की पूजा करता है और रात के समय जागकर भगवान के मंत्रों का जप करता है, उसे भगवान शिव आनन्द और मोक्ष प्रदान करते हैं | साथ ही महाशिवरात्रि के दिन विशिष्ट सिद्धियों की प्राप्ति के लिये बहुत से लोग महानिशीथ काल में भगवान शिव की पूजा करने के इच्छुक होते हैं। वहीं विष्णु पुराण में कुछ ऐसी चीजों के बारे में बताया गया है जिन्हें भगवान को चढ़ाने से वह जल्द प्रसन्न हो जाते हैं।
