Mahashivaratri, the festival of immense power and devotion of Lord Shiva, is celebrated every year on the Chaturdashi of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Falgun and this year the date falls on March 11. According to mythological beliefs, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were married on this day. On this day, Lord Shiva and Parvatiji are worshiped with full ritualistic law and they are offered hemp, dhatura, bel patra and plum. Many people chant religious rituals and Rudrabhishek and Maha Mahamrityunjaya Mantra on this day. It is believed that chanting Mahamrityunjaya mantra has special significance on this day and all our wishes are fulfilled. On this day, people observe Shiva in most of the houses and in the evening complete the fast with a flourish.
