The U.S. Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says the U.S. has a strong and very effective homeland defense system against North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Speaking at the Hudson Institute think tank on Wednesday, John Hyten said interceptors in Alaska and the Vandenberg Air Base can handle the threat.
However, he said U.S. missile defense capabilities need to be modernized to respond to evolving global threats.
He said he was disappointed by the termination of a new kill vehicle program last year, adding it's crucial to move quickly to secure a next generation kill vehicle with more specific and realistic requirements.
