Studies from countries hit hard by COVID-19 show... only around five to ten percent of people have antibodies to the virus.
This is according to the chief scientist at the World Health Organization on Friday.
Dr. Soumya Swaminathan noted that it's been as high as 20 percent in some countries.
But she further explained that about 50 to 60 percent of the population would need to be immune to the virus to create a protective herd immunity.
Other health experts have estimated the figure to be around 70 to 80 percent of the population.
The WHO chief scientist highlighted that herd immunity achieved through vaccination is the most effective.
