Kim Min-ji reports.
President Moon Jae-in has thanked the people for providing the government with momentum in its fight against COVID-19,... saying he feels a great responsibility.
His comments come after the ruling Democratic Party, along with its satellite party,... clinched a sweeping victory in the general election.... winning 180 of the 300 parliamentary seats.
"While President Moon is happy about the great choice the people have made, he first feels a sense of heavy responsibility. He said people showed eagerness, which has given the government momentum in its fight to overcome the current crisis."
The president also said he respects and appreciates the active participation despite the election being held in the midst of a global pandemic.
Moon added that the government will listen to the public and boldly overcome the situation.
The general election was widely seen as a midterm referendum for President Moon,... who has two years left in office.
The government's response to COVID-19 has been considered a major factor behind the success with people opting to support the administration.
Moon's approval rating has topped 50 percent a stark contrast to a few months back when it dipped to below 40 percent on a slowing economy, a scandal surrounding his top aide... as well as the government's approach on North Korea.
Wednesday's landslide victory is expected to give greater momentum to the administration,... and pave the way for Moon to push on with his agenda,... such as "inclusive" economic policies and engagement with North Korea.
It's also expected to accelerate the launch of a special body to probe high-level officials set for July,... as well as speed up reforms of the so-called 'organs of power'.
For the time being,... the top office says Moon will focus on tackling COVID-19 and minimizing the economic fallout,... as well as advancing preparations for a post-virus era. First up is to pass the supplementary budget bill... that'll be used to provide financial relief funds to citizens.
